Smith Earns Pair of Awards for Athletic Training

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University Head Athletic Trainer Kip Smith has recently been recognized with two awards for his work and diligence to the profession of athletic training/sports medicine. The Mentone, Ind., native is in his 25th year at IU and his 21st year as the school's head athletic trainer.
The Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association, a six-state regional organization, honored Smith with the Golden Pinnacle Award. It is the highest award from the Association and is given for leadership, commitment to excellence and contributions to the profession.
He was also honored by the Indiana State University College of Health and Human Performance as the recipient of an Outstanding Alumnus Award. In 2000, Smith was inducted to the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association and was also recognized by the National Athletic Trainers Association with the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
Smith has been a National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) board certified athletic trainer for 33 years. He coordinated and provided collegiate sports medicine services for the University of Pittsburgh for nine years prior to joining the IU staff.
Active in his profession outside the University, Kip has been a lecturer of numerous sport medicine clinics, workshops, and meetings. Additionally, he has been a book reviewer, consultant, and has been published. He has served the Indiana Athletic Trainers Association in various capacities for 16 years and was President from 1998-2000.
Smith and his wife, Debbie, have one daughter, Stacey, a son, Jason, and three grandchildren.
