Throughout the 2007 preseason, members of the IU women's soccer team will be giving fans a daily insider's look at what it's like to be a part of the squad. Today, sophomore transfer Nikki Bonacorsi tells her experiences as a newcomer who isn't a member of the freshman class.
Preseason has been very intense for me for numerous reasons. As a transfer, I have experienced several obstacles similar to the freshmen. However, one difference that the freshmen had was a thorough introduction to the team and school. Since my commitment was later in the semester, I did not have a sufficient amount of time to become familiar with everything. I was very nervous about this upcoming year.
I arrived on campus early to attend captain's practice in order to better prepare myself. Well, my so-called "fresh start" could have been in a movie. We played a short-sided game goal-to-goal, and within the first five minutes, I unintentionally blocked a cross with my face. As you can probably deduce, my nose started bleeding uncontrollably. So there I was, the transfer, that no one knew, sitting on the sidelines. While attempting to stop the bleeding with the only pair of soccer socks I had in my bag, I kept thinking about what the other girls thought of me. I was hoping they were not questioning my toughness. After some time had passed, my nose finally stopped bleeding and I participated in the last few minutes of the game.
After that fantastic introduction, I was eager to see what else could happen. We went to Katy Stewart's house for a cookout, where her mom had prepared some delectable food. At the cookout, I was able to get to know the team a little better, and simultaneously, become more excited for the upcoming weekend at Jessica Boots' lake house.
Slowly, these team activities were making my transition a little easier. At the lake house, we went tubing, swimming and watched some television (new season of "The Hills!"). Overall, it was a great team bonding experience!
Of course following this casual event came the nerve-wracking preseason. We had fitness tests, which are always fun, soccer practices and more. Nevertheless, we have made it through a good amount of preseason, and are looking forward to the season! After playing an intense intrasquad game today, Coach rewarded us with an exciting trip. I am sure if you stay tuned you will find out what our adventure entails! Get excited for this year! Go Hoosiers!
