After Monday morning's practice, iuhoosiers.com sat down with sophomore back Kevin Alston (Silver Spring, Md.). This summer, Alston traveled to Brazil to compete at the Pan American Games with the U-18 National Team.
How was your experience competing in Brazil?
"It was great, I was glad to be there. I loved the way it was set up, like an Olympics with the countries being housed in their own apartments. It was very well run."
How do you feel it helped prepare you for the season?
" It was good for my fitness, and it gave me a chance to get back up to speed and prepare for this level of play. Over there I was competing against older guys, which is how it will be when we take on veteran teams this fall."
What was the most interesting part of being over there?
"Seeing all the different athletes and sports. You would randomly meet badminton players, water polo players, athletes you don't normally run in to."
What changes or improvements have you noticed in the Hoosiers since being back in camp?
"I think everyone is adapting well to change and the new form. Last year we got off to a slow start because people were still trying to figure out their role. I think we have a better idea of where everyone will fit this year."
What is your impression of the freshmen?
"I think they are all showing pretty well. They are starting to get the jitters out. They came to play, and that raises the level for everyone, including the veterans."
What are you most looking forward to this season?
"A National Championship. I would like to get one or two of those during my time here."
