Hoosiers Picked 15th in STX/NFHCA Preseason Poll

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Hoosiers field hockey will open the 2007 season ranked 15th in the country, according to the preseason poll released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Tuesday.
Head coach Amy Robertson, entering her eighth season, and the Hoosiers were ranked fifth among Big Ten teams in the poll. Penn State will start the season ranked seventh, Iowa is tenth, Michigan is 12th, and Ohio State is 13th. A sixth Big Ten team, Michigan State is also in the top 20, checking in at 19.
Of the 17 games on the Hoosier schedule this season, seven are against teams that begin the season ranked in the top 20. Besides the five Big Ten teams already listed, Indiana will take on No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 14 Louisville.
There are six other schools on the Indiana schedule that also received points in the first poll. One of the Hoosiers' opponents this weekend, University of California, Berkeley just missed out on the top 20 and came in at 21. Stanford, Ohio, Albany and Miami (Ohio) round out the rest of the opponents receiving points.
The University of Maryland, with 18 first place votes will open the season number one, followed by Wake Forest and North Carolina. North Carolina came in third despite receiving the second most first place votes with 14. Duke and Connecticut round out the top five.
Indiana will open the season with two games at the Univerisity of California, Berkeley starting on Saturday, August 25 against Pacific at 4 p.m. EDT.
