SAN FRANCISCO - Indiana sophomore men's golfer Alex Martin narrowly missed out on the match play portion of the U.S. Amateur Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Martin, who qualified for the event with a 36-hole 134 score at the Dayton Country Club in Dayton, Ohio, finished in a tie for 59th in the stroke play portion of the event along with 16 other competitors. The 17 golfers battled in a playoff for the six remaining match play slots, but Martin fell short.
The Middletown, Ohio, native carded a 4-over 74 on Monday and wrapped up Tuesday's postponed round on Wednesday morning at 3-over par. Jason Kokrak of Warren, Ohio, claimed medalist honors with a 69-68, 137 total.
Martin has had an impressive run this summer. Along with qualifying for the U.S. Amateur, he finished third overall and as the low amateur at the Ohio Open Championship.
