DEKALB, Ill. - The Indiana University volleyball team dropped their first match of the season on Sunday, a 3-0 (23-30, 27-30, 28-30) loss to Western Kentucky. Seniors Lauren Ditteon and Juli Pierce were named to the NIU Invitational All-Tournament team for the Hoosiers.
Indiana limited the 2006 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, Megan Argabright, to a .250 hitting efficiency, over .200 percent lower than her '06 season average. Unfortunately, Western Kentucky's setter took advantage of the extra attention paid to Argabright and connected on 12 devastating kills.
The score remained tight through the first half of game one. At 14-14, WKU's setter recorded one of those kills to give the Hilltoppers the lead for good. Indiana kept it close at 23-25 before Western Kentucky snatched up the final five points for the 30-23 win.
Indiana's offense picked up in game two as four different Hoosiers had five kills or more, in addition to Senior Gabrielle Allison's four kills on just six swings. The Hoosiers fought back from an early deficit to knot things up at 25-25, thanks to an Allison-kill. However, WKU won five of the next seven points to take a 30-27 win in game two.
Senior Annie Moddrell gave the Crimson and Cream a shot in the arm when she entered the match in game three and contributed four kills, three blocks and a dig. A block by Allison and Freshman Taylor Witter combined with a Wittmer-service ace pushed IU ahead 21-19. After a short surge by the Hilltoppers, it remained a stalemate all the way to 28-28. A Hoosier blocking and attack error then ended the match, howver, 30-28.
The Hoosiers travel to the University of Tennesse Tournament next weekend. In addition to playing the Volunteers, IU is also slated to take on Belmont and Jacksonville State down in Knoxville, Tennesseee.
