Rising sophomore Sterling Mack recently helped his summer team, the Park City (Kan.) Rangers to a spot in the National Baseball Congress World Series with strong outfield play. Mack is one of several Hoosiers who have played well this summer on club squads.
Though the Rangers were eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 8, by the defending champion Santa Barbara (Calif.) Foresters, Mack's play helped lift the Walter Johnson League team to the NBC World Series. Mack helped the squad qualify for the prestigious tournament with a 2-for-3, two-run performance in the deciding game. In a previous round, Mack was named the tournament MVP after going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and a stolen base.
In the Cape Cod Summer League, Josh Phegley was named a starting catcher for the all-star squad, but before he was able to participate in the game, he suffered a hand injury that will likely sideline him through the summer season. Phegley does have a new, familiar face on the Wareham Gatemen, though, as junior pitcher Tyler Tufts has joined the team. Tufts has started a pair of games and appeared in three, going 1-2 with a 4.05 ERA.
Catcher Justin Morales and pitcher Jarrett Casey helped their team, the Union City Greyhounds, take the KIT (Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee) League Tournament title, topping Fulton in the championship round. Casey was one of the team's top pitchers with a 1.74 ERA and a .134 batting average against.
