ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Sophomore Laura Nochta shot a 71 in round two to lead Indiana as the Hoosiers sit in fifth place after day one of the Wolverine Invitational at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich.
"This was not the type of day we were hoping to have," said head coach Clint Wallman. "It was just a bad day and we need to get back up and get ready for tomorrow."
The tournament concludes Sunday with a single round.
After a bumpy start to round one with bogeys on three of the first five holes, Nochta settled down with pars on the next nine holes. Nochta's first-round 75 was followed by a solid round two. After opening the round with a double bogey on four, Nochta clawed her way back to even par with birdies on seven and 13 to get back to even.
A tough stretch began with back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16. A birdie on 17 was followed by another bogey on 18, but she closed the round with a birdie on three and is currently tied for fifth at +4 after 36 holes.
Kellye Belcher is tied for 22nd at +13 with scores of 80 and 75. In round one, pars on 14, 15 and 16 were followed by a bogey on 17 and double bogey on 18 to finish out the round at +9.
Round two saw Belcher start out hot at -1 on the front nine, but back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11 but her back at one-over and she finished the round taking an extra stroke on three of the final five holes to come in at +4.
Senior Elaine Harris is tied for 12th at +11 with a two-round total of 153 (76-77). Harris was playing steady on the back nine until a double bogey on 16 left her at +6 for the round.
Harris got off to a slow start in round one, posting a 6-over score of 38, including a quadruple bogey on the par three fifth hole. Harris was much stronger on the back nine, shooting a 36 to finish the round at +5.
Replacing the injured Anita Gahir in the lineup, junior Amber Lindgren, paced the Hoosiers early on, coming in at par on seven of her first 10 holes and picking up a birdie on seven. She finished the first round at +4 and came into the clubhouse with a 79 to sit at +12 and tied for 16th.
Lauren Harling was even through the first four holes in the opening round but ran into trouble on nine with a double bogey to drop to +4. Harling continued to struggle with three-straight bogeys on 13, 14 and 15, and was saddled with a double bogey on 18, finishing up at nine over.
