LAST TIME OUT
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kevin Noschang's second goal in as many games had a record-setting crowd on its feet at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium as the No. 8 Hoosiers (1-0-1) defeated No. 1 UCLA (0-2), 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the adidas/IU Credit Union Hoosier Classic.
The winning score came in the 75th minute of an evenly-matched contest. Brian Ackley received the ball in traffic about 10 yards out and saw Noschang coming in on the left side. The junior forward managed to stay onside and received the ball with just enough time to get a shot off to the far post that was too much for UCLA goalkeeper Brian Perk to handle. Noschang also had a goal in the Hoosiers' 1-1 tie with Maryland on Friday night.
"I thought we were pretty good today," said head coach Mike Freitag. "I am proud of how this whole team came together. It was another hot day and our bench really came up big."
A record crowd of 7,243 was on hand to witness the victory as part of Indiana's "Fill the Bill" promotion. The previous mark of 6,000 was set against SMU in 1987. It was also Indiana's second-straight win against a No. 1-ranked opponent at Armstrong Stadium as the Hoosiers were 1-0 winners over top-ranked Akron in 2005.
The game got off to a quick start for the Hoosiers as Noschang managed to outrun the Bruins' defense for a 1-on-1 opportunity in the sixth minute. A UCLA defender managed to trip him up in the penalty area, but the referee deemed it a fair attempt at the ball and signaled for play to continue.
UCLA controlled possession for the next several minutes, but the Hoosiers were back in form as a shot from just outside the penalty area from Eric Alexander at 14:11 forced Perk to make a diving save. The ensuing corner kick set up another opportunity for IU, but Ring sent his shot off the rebound high.
With 10 minutes remaining in the half, Charley Traylor, named the Fair Play award winner for the tournament, and Billy Weaver nearly hooked up for an Indiana goal. Coming down the left side, Traylor served a nearly perfect ball toward weaver in front of the pipes, but Perk managed to fall on the ball before Weaver could get a foot on it.
It was freshman Andy Adlard who nearly had his first collegiate goal as the first half came to a close. Ring offered service across the goal mouth, and Adlard got his head cleanly on the ball but sent the shot just high.
Indiana held a 6-3 shot advantage at the half and finished the game up on the Bruins in attempts, 14-9. UCLA had nine corner kicks to the Hoosiers' 3, with most of those coming in the final minutes as they tried to even up the match.
The Hoosiers came out firing in the second half with a pair of early shots, but it was UCLA which looked like it might take the lead with several dangerous chances in the 68th minute. Less than a minute before Noschang's game-winning score, it was Ring who sent a shot just wide on a 1-on-1 with Perk.
"At halftime we felt we really needed to come out and put it to them," said midfielder John Mellencamp. "We really felt like we could come out and get one (a goal)."
It was midfielder Alexander who kept the Bruins from tying the match at 76:56 when he managed to thwart Maxwell Griffin's 1-on-1 battle with IU goalkeeper Chay Cain, getting a foot on the ball as Griffin sent off his shot.
UCLA, which scored a goal to tie Notre Dame with just :38 remaining on Friday, almost did the same when Chance Meyers nailed a header off the cross bar with just six minutes left in the match.
"Our defense didn't give up much today," Freitag said. "I am very proud of our team defending.
"I was disappointed in the other night because I know what we are capable of doing. We showed our composure today. To play a game against an opponent like this and come up with a quality win is a good start."
Maryland's Graham Zusi was named the Offensive MVP of the tournament, while IU's Kevin Alston was named defensive MVP. Noschang, Ring and Ofori Sarkodie were named to the all-tournament team.
