VALPARAISO, Ind. - For the third weekend in a row, the Indiana University volleyball team has won the first two matches of the weekend tournament. After rolling to a 30-22, 30-23,30-25 win over host school, Valparaiso, the Hoosiers will next play against Western Michigan Saturday at noon, central time for the tournament crown.
Indiana set the tone early in the match, going on a stretch in which they took nine of 13 points for a 14-8 advantage. Just as Valparaiso edged back in the game at 20-20, the IU offense went into second gear and captured 10 of the next 12 points for the 30-22 win. Freshman Taylor Wittmer sealed the deal with back-to-back kills for points 29 and 30. Wittmer was the player of the match versus Marshall earlier in the day, and kept it coming in the nightcap. The Loogootee, Indiana native recorded nine kills and shutdown the Crusaders defensively with nine blocks in the match.
The Hoosiers' hitting efficiency dipped from game one's .286 to just .167 in the second stanza, but the final result was nearly identical in a 20-23 win. Indiana took advantage of several Crusader attack errors and strolled to the easy game two victory, never trailing in the game.
The third and final game did not come so easy for the Cream and Crimson, but the 30-25 game-three triumph still capped off the "W." Indiana dug themselves out of an early deficit by putting together a good run in the middle of the game, led by Sophomore Kelsey Hall's three kills. Annie Moddrell did just what a senior needs to do, lead by example. Moddrell served as a spark plug for the Hoosier attack, nailing home four kills on eight swings with no errors in game three alone.
As mentioned above, the Indiana Hoosiers get back at it Saturday, Sept. 8 with a shot at a 3-0 weekend and the tournament championship against the Broncos of Western Michigan.
