EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana Hoosiers women's golf team recorded an opening day score of 603 (302-301) to sit in second place after two rounds at the Mary Fossum Invitational at the par-72 Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Sunday.
"I thought we played alright," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We were steady and didn't do anything that would hurt us. With it being the first tournament of the year, we are trying to work our way back into playing shape."
Sophomore Kellye Belcher leads the Hoosiers at +5 (76-73) over 36 holes and is currently tied for fourth. After going four over for the first round, Belcher came out and shot a 37 on the front nine of round two and came home at even par on the back side.
"Kellye played very steady today," Wallman said. "She hit a lot of greens and gave herself opportunities to make birdies."
Senior Elaine Harris is poised to crack the top 10, sitting in a tie for 11th at 152 (77-75). Harris opened round two with a bogey on hole three but came back to birdie holes four, seven and 16. She closed out the round by shooting par or better on the final six holes
Sophomore Laura Nochta is tied for 15th at +9 after 36 holes, going four over in the first round and five over in the final round of the day. Nochta's lone birdie of the afternoon came on the par-5 17 to put her just one-over on the back nine of round two.

Gahir picked up birdies on hole five in the first round and sixteen in round two, but it was hole 18 that gave her trouble on the day with a double bogey and a bogey on the par-4.
Rounding out the IU contingent is senior Lauren Harling at +11 and tied for 25th. Harling started out the day among the leaders in third place with a 1-over-par round one, recording birdies on the third, seven, 14th and 17th holes. Round two was a struggle as Harling ballooned to 10-over, opening with a double bogey on the second hole and bogeying the par-4 No. 4 and double bogeying No. 5.
"Lauren posted a good score in round one, then got off to bad start in the second," Wallman said. "But she was able to rally and got things back under control."
Playing as an individual, junior Amber Lindgren posted a two-round score of 156 (80-76) and is ????. Lindgren had a rough start to round two with double bogeys on the first two holes, followed by bogeys on three, four and five. She would go on to birdie two of the final four holes and was two under on the back nine with birdies on 14 and 16, both par-4s.
Host Michigan State has a 12-stroke lead over the Hoosiers at 591 (+15). Kent State is third (610/311-299), seven strokes behind IU. Michigan State's Laura Kueny is the individual leader at -3 (71-70), followed by teammates Amy Neff (69-77), Sara Brown (75-73) and Belcher.
