ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Brooke Zimmerman scored three goals but the Hoosiers could not overcome a nine goal outburst by the top-ranked UCLA Bruins (4-0) in a 15-6 loss in the final match of the Michigan Kick-Off. The Hoosiers finish the opening weekend of the season with a 1-3 mark with all three of the losses coming to teams ranked in the top 11 in the preseason poll.
"We expect her (Zimmerman) to score goals for us," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We need her to be a leader on offense and take the opportunities when she gets the chance. It is very encouraging that she was able to convert the chances she got this weekend and was able to shoot the ball so well."
After getting behind 9-0 at the end of the first period, the Hoosiers (1-3) played the Bruins even the rest of the way with Indiana even outscoring UCLA 3-1 in the second period.
"We did a lot of good things," Indiana head coach Barry King said, "but we just didn't come out ready to play right from the first whistle. They got a comfortable lead and then we started doing some things over the last three quarters that were what we needed to do right from the start."
Sophomore Nicole Sands scored her third and fourth goals of the weekend in the loss while junior Maggie Hannon added her second goal of the season to the IU cause.
The Hoosiers now have a week off before they return to the pool on Feb. 9 at the Triton Invite at La Jolla, Calif., against UC San Diego at 10:15 a.m. Pacific Time.
