BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Head Volleyball Coach Sherry Dunbar announced the addition of Keith Schunzel to her coaching staff on Friday. Schunzel will begin his role as an assistant coach on Monday, Jan. 7. He served as an assistant at Valparaiso University the past two seasons.
"We are very excited with the newest addition to the Hoosier family," said Dunbar. "Keith is a promising coach in the collegiate ranks that is very motivated to succeed. He is a `hit-the-ground-running' type of person and he's ready to help this program take the next step."
"I am thrilled to be joining the staff at Indiana University," said Schunzel. "IU Volleyball is clearly a program on the rise both in the Big Ten and nationally; and I look forward to helping the team continue their ascent."
Schunzel helped guide Valpo to a 44-24 overall record in his two years with the Crusaders and a pair of trips to the conference championship match. Prior to Valparaiso, Schunzel coached at Purdue during their 2005 "Sweet 16" season. Additional coaching stops include Muncie Central High School (2002-03) and Munciana Volleyball Club (2001-04). The Muncie Central Bearcats advanced to the state championship in both seasons under the guidance of Schunzel, taking home the state title in 2002.
"At Purdue he got a taste of Big Ten volleyball and over the last decade has formed roots in the state of Indiana through his playing days with Ball State and his work at several other institutions in the state," said Dunbar. "Keith has followed our program closely and now is ready to be a part of it."
Schunzel has extensive instructional experience as well, including his position as the Camp Director this summer at the Synergy Volleyball Club Summer Camp in Philadelphia. He served as camp instructor for Notre Dame (2004), Purdue (2004-05), Ball State (2000-04) and Missouri Baptist University (2001-04).
Schunzel was a standout on the court while playing for the Cardinals of Ball State from 1999-2004. He led his squad to the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Championship and a trip to the NCAA Final Four in 2002, his first of three seasons as a team captain. Individual honors received include: 2004 Second Team All-America, 2003 Honorable Mention All-America, 2002-04 First Team All-MIVA and 2001 Second Team All-MIVA. Schunzel played professionally overseas from 2004-05 as the starting setter for VfB Friedrichshafen Volleyball Club in Germany.
"Keith's successes as a player will be instrumental in the physical and mental development of our setters," said Dunbar.
"Indiana is a great place to go to school and to play volleyball," said Schunzel. "I am ecstatic to have the chance to be a part of the IU Volleyball family."
