BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Jeff Overton (2002-05) and Shaun Micheel (1988-91) will kick off their 2008 PGA TOUR campaigns at this weekend's Sony Open. The former Hoosiers will attempt to tame the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Thursday, Jan. 10-Sunday, Jan. 13.
Overton earned his TOUR card by finishing 199th on the 2007 money list, earning $1,009,630 on the season. He finished second behind Tiger Woods with a 70.10 actual scoring average and third behind Woods and Justin Rose with a 361 all-around ranking.
The Evansville, Ind., native accomplished all of this in just 19 events, where he made 11 cuts, collected six top 25s and three top 10s. Overton's best finish of the year came at the Wyndham Championship (Aug. 16-19), where he tied for second place. Additionally, he played seven events on the Nationwide Tour and carded three top 25s en route to earning $28,911.
A regular on the TOUR since the 2000 season and Indiana's lone major champion (2003 PGA Championship), Micheel has played in 29 events each of the last three seasons. He recorded three top-10 and seven top-25 finishes in 2007, including a tie for ninth place at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship.
Micheel is making his ninth appearance in the Sony Open. He has three top-20 finishes, highlighted by a share of 13th place back in 2005.
