COACH WALLMAN'S THOUGHTS
On the first look at the site of the 2009 Big Ten Championship, as well as the first look at the Big Ten field:
"Kampen is a great golf course. It has hosted National Championships and is an elite-level golf course. It is going to test all aspects of everyone's game.
"Greens in regulation will be the key statistic. I think that will translate into how well everyone does. So that has been our focus the last week and a half, as well as our wedge play.
"This is going to be the strongest Big Ten group collectively since I have been here at IU. Wisconsin has played well; Northwestern is better; Michigan is in better shape; Minnesota has been very strong. I think the entire level of the Big Ten is elevated. It is going to be a really good test for us to get out and see where we stack up.
On what the team has been working on over the last few weeks:
"We have been talking about some of the things professional do to try and eliminate the big numbers. That has been a focus for us. We have divided the past couple of weeks into mental game strategies; take the big numbers out of play and aim for much more conservative targets but with aggressive swings toward those conservative targets. It is a very patient way to play the game. If you make a mistake, don't be a hero, just get it back into play. Bogeys aren't the ones that hurt you, it is the quads.
"On the physical side, a lot of emphasis has been put on the greens in regulation, and our wedge play. If we don't hit the greens in regulation, we need a strong wedge so we can get the ball close enough to the hole to make the put."
On the team's focus given the up-and-down results so far this season:
"I think we are still in the growing process. It is our third tournament and we are still finding ourselves. We have had excellent play from our juniors and Cecilia (Orevik) has thrown in a couple of good rounds. I think she is ready to have a good tournament, along with Amber (Lindgren). Our practices have been good and the attitude in practice has been good.
"I really believe that each tournament we are going to get better as a group. I fully expect us to have a solid tournament. One of my personal goals would be to not have to count a score in the 80s."
On what the team hopes to accomplish over the next few weeks as the fall season winds down:
"You want to have, heading into the offseason, a feeling of optimism. You want to head into the offseason understanding where you are at and what you need to do get better.
"I look at the next couple of weeks as a great opportunity to generate some positive momentum. We need to look forward and not backward."
