CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Jason Ford rushed for 172 yards and three touchdowns to lead Illinois (4-3, 2-2 Big Ten) to a 55-13 win over Indiana (2-5, 0-5).
Making his first career start, IU sophomore quarterback Ben Chappell threw for 172 yards on 12-of-29. Junior wideout Andrew Means led the Hoosiers with 67 yards on four receptions.
Indiana ran for 141 yards, highlighted by the play of fifth-year senior Marcus Thigpen and junior Bryan Payton. Thigpen averaged 4.1 yards with 69 yards on 17 carries. Payton added 68 yards on 13 carries, good for a 5.2 yard average, and posted a 25-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Junior Austin Thomas paced the Hoosier defense with 11 tackles, while senior safety Joe Kleinsmith collected the first sack of his career.
Ford, a true freshman, scored on touchdown runs of 41 yards, 5 yards and 1 yard.
Illinois quarterback Juice Williams was 16-of-22 for 271 yards and three touchdowns.
The Hoosiers return to Bloomington for a Homecoming showdown with Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 25. Game time is set for noon EDT and the game will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
