INDIANAPOLIS - Two former Indiana men's soccer players and former head coach Jerry Yeagley were voted to the NCAA Men's College Cup 50th Anniversary Team, the NCAA announced Thursday. A total of 32 players and six coaches were on the initial ballot. Fans had a chance to vote for the top 11 players and a head coach on NCAA.com earlier this month.
Indiana's Armando Betancourt, and Angelo DiBernardo were voted to the squad. Also part of the initial ballot were Dema Kovalenko, Brian Maisonneuve, Pat Noonan and Ken Snow.
Betancourt was a three-time All-American from 1979-81 and was named Soccer America's Player of the Decade for the 1980s. He was the 1981 Hermann Trophy winner and ranks third on the school's all-time points list with 165. He was one of three Hoosiers named to Soccer America's All-Century Team in 2000 and was elected to the IU Hall of Fame in 1992.
DiBernardo earned All-America honors in 1977 and 1978 and was the Hoosiers' first Hermann Trophy winner as he took home the award in 1978. He was selected to Soccer America's All-Century Team in 2000. DiBernardo led Indiana to the NCAA Championship game in 1978 and a 23-2 record. He was elected to the IU Hall of Fame in 1991.
Yeagley's coaching record speaks for itself as he is the all-time winningest Division I men's soccer coach with a record of 544-101-45 (.828) in 31 seasons at Indiana. Yeagley never had a losing season as head coach and led the program to six NCAA titles. Over his 31 seasons the Hoosiers made 16 trips to the NCAA College Cup, including 12 championship game appearances. In all Yeagley led Indiana to 28 NCAA Tournament berths, the third most in NCAA history, including on in each of his final 17 seasons. During his tenure Yeagley won an unprecedented six NSCAA National Coach of the Year awards and was inducted into the United State Soccer Federation Hall of Fame in 1989, and the NSCAA Hall of Fame in 2008.
"I am honored to be a part of this group," Yeagley said. "I am very proud of Armando and Angelo, as well as the other nominated. If it were up to me, there are so many more I would nominate. I was blessed to have these wonderful young men and successful soccer players and they are the reason I am able to receive this honor. This recognition really belongs to all who have worn the IU uniform."
The 11 student-athletes who make up the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer 50th Anniversary team are: Jeff Agoos, Virginia; Armando Betancourt, Indiana; Paul Caligiuri, UCLA; Richard Chinapoo, Long Island; Angelo DiBernardo, Indiana; Brad Friedel, UCLA; John Harkes, Virginia; Glenn Myernick, Hartwick; Farrukh Quraishi, SUNY Oneonta; Claudio Reyna, Virginia; and Al Trost, Saint Louis
