COACH WALLMAN'S THOUGHTS
On last week's fourth-place finish at the Lady Northern Invitational:
"I was really pleased with last week's performance. We finished third out of all the Big Ten teams, fourth overall, and there were a couple of things that really stuck out in my mind. The first thing was we stuck to a solid game plan by hitting the greens and picking conservative targets.
"The other thing that was good about the tournament was that everyone had a really solid round. I think that is important not only for that tournament, but also as we play through the rest of the year and when we head back (for the Big Ten Championships)."
On carrying that momentum into the final fall event:
"I am glad we don't have a big break in between. Momentum is something that can keep going if you keep playing. The other thing about momentum is it is mainly attitudinal. If you believe you have good momentum going and if you believe you played well, it is much easier to approach your next event with a good mind-set.
"I think knowing we played at our capabilities (last week) and knowing we are going to a golf course where we have played well in the past, gives them a lot of confidence."
On the Boulder Creek Golf Club course:
"It is a course that is conducive to scoring. There are not a lot of penalizing troubles, as we had at Purdue. Here, if you hit it into trouble par isn't as bad, but you may lose a half a shot to the field trying to make birdies. In the past, we have shot very good numbers there. It can be a course where a lot of people shoot 72 to 74, and that would be an average score for the field.
"This is a fun tournament because it gives you the opportunity to score. It gives you the opportunity to make birdies. The par-5s are reachable; the greens put very true. It is just a matter of taking advantage of the opportunities that are there."
On how this team has come together over the fall:
"I think the last event was a very pivotal tournament for us from a couple of standpoints. Number one, just from a confidence standpoint; the Big Ten is strong this year. To be in range of Purdue and Michigan State was a confidence booster. For each of the ladies to have a strong, countable round was a confidence booster. To play a tough golf course pretty well was a confidence booster. That is more of what we had needed as a group than swing instruction, putting instruction, etc. Sometimes all you need is a little success to get you going."
