BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Led by junior Kellye Belcher's opening-round 70, the Indiana women's golf team sits in 13th place after day one of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
Indiana tallied a 4-over 292 for the day, 12 strokes behind leaders Louisville and Pepperdine which sit at -8 (280). Host UNLV and Oklahoma State are tied for third with a 282 (-6), followed by Texas Tech in fifth (-5/283). The tournament continues with single rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"We did some good things out on the course today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We got off to a great start but slipped a little bit in the middle. A strong finish to the round has the team optimistic heading into tomorrow's round."
Belcher leads the way with a 2-under 70 and is tied for 12th. Belcher was off and running in the first round, opening the day with birdies on 10, 11 and 12. She shaved another stroke off her total on the par-4 14, and was at -5 with her fifth birdie of the day on the par-5 16th hole. She closed out the first nine with a bogey on 18. She remained at -4 until a bogeys on three and four added two strokes to her tally. She took one off with a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole but ran into trouble with a bogey on eight.
Junior Laura Nochta posted a 1-over 73 and is toed for 36th after round one. Nochta was steady throughout the first nine holes, posting a birdie on 11 and hitting pars on the rest of the holes. After going to -2 with a birdie on one, Nochta saw her advantage slip away with a double bogey on three that put her back at even par. She added a bogey on six but recorded pars on seven, eight and nine to end the day.
Junior Anita Gahir is also tied for 36th with a 1-over 73. Gahir had an uncharacteristic rough start to the tournament, bogeying two of the first four holes. She countered that with a birdie on the par-3 12th hole, but added another bogey on 17 and a double on 18 to fall to +4. Gahir settled down to reel off five-straight pars on holes one through five, followed by birdies on six, eight and nine.
With a 4-over 76, senior Amber Lindgren is tied for 67th. Lindgren was at one under before a double bogey on 18 left her at +1 after nine holes. She climbed back to even with a birdie on two but needed five strokes on the par-4 third hole. That set up back-to-back bogeys for Lindgren, and a double on six dropped her to +4. That was her last hiccup of the round as she finished with pars on seven, eight and nine.
Also tied for 67th with a score of 76 in round one is sophomore Cecilia Orevik. Orevik opened with a bogey on 10 but settled down for pars on the next 10 holes. She added another bogey on three to drop to +2, and tacked on extra strokes on holes four and five to drop to +4. Orevik ended the day with pars on the final four holes.
