BLOOMINGTON, Ind - The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) announced Tuesday that Indiana sophomore Ashley Benson has been selected as the CVU.com National Player of the Week for Oct. 20 through Oct. 26.
The 6-3 middle blocker from Bloomington, Ind., got the Hoosiers on track for a pair of crucial Big Ten road wins.
First, in a down-to-the-wire five set match at Northwestern, Benson nearly came up with a triple-double, recording a career-high 23 kills to go along with eight digs and nine blocks. Defensively at the net she had eight block assists and one solo, while her hot hand on offense led to a team-high .455 hitting percentage.
Then, two days later, at Wisconsin, Benson again was dominant on both sides of the net as Indiana came away with the 3-1 win. Offensively she finished with 14 kills on .333 hitting, while defensively she put back another eight blocks.
The victory was Indiana's first at Wisconsin since 1995 and the first of any kind over the Badgers since 2002.
For the week, Benson averaged 4.11 kills per set while hitting .412. She also recorded 10 digs and turned back 17 attacks to average 1.89 blocks per set.
