Indiana Game Notes
Indiana at Minnesota
10-4-08
• Marcus Thigpen finished the game with three catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. With those receiving yards, he became the first player in school history to go over 1,000 yards in rushing (1,269), receiving (1,003) and kickoff returns (1,511)
• With Thigpen's 77-yard touchdown reception, he now has three 75-plus yard scores in the last two weeks for the Hoosiers. Adding in his three career kickoff returns for scores and a 74-yard TD catch as a freshman against Central Michigan, Thigpen has seven career touchdowns on plays that went for over 74 yards.
• Indiana now has six touchdowns of 60-plus yards on the season and four from 75 or more yards. Thigpen has been involved of four of those plays (two rush and two pass), while Kellen Lewis has two rushing TDs and one passing TD over 60 yards.
• Ben Chappell's 77-yard TD pass to Marcus Thigpen was the longest throw of the sophomore's career. It was also his first career touchdown throw. His previous long throw was a 24-yard toss to Damarlo Belcher last week against MSU.
• The Indiana defense held the Gophers to just 59 yards rushing. That is the lowest number of rushing yards allowed to a Big Ten foe since Purdue recorded a net of -8 yards on November 24, 2001.
• Jammie Kirlew's 2.5 sacks in the first half gave him a career-high five on the season and 11 for his career. The 2.5 sacks are the second-highest single-game total in his career and he now has three multi-sack games in his career, including two this season.
• Kirlew's 10 tackles matches a career high. He also recorded 3.5 tackles for loss in the game.
• In last season's Big Ten road opener at Iowa, Kirlew posted 3.5 sacks, the third-highest single-game total in Indiana history. Coupled with this afternoon's performance, Kirlew has six sacks in the Hoosiers' last two Big Ten road openers.
• When Justin Carrington picked up a half-sack in the first, he became the eighth player for the Hoosiers to record a sack in 2008.
• Nick Polk forced his second fumble of the year and the fourth of his career in the third quarter. He has now been a part of four turnovers this season, as he recovered a fumble and returned it 31 yards for a score against Ball State and intercepted a pass in the second game of the year against Murray State.
• Kevin Burrus' fumble recovery in the second quarter was the first of the junior's career. Matt Mayberry recovered Nick Polk's forced fumble in the third for his first career recovery.
• After not recording a takeaway against Michigan State last week, the Hoosiers rebounded with two fumble recoveries against the Gophers. Indiana has recorded at least one takeaway in 19 out of the last 20 games.
