INDIANAPOLIS - Six former Indiana men's soccer players and former head coach Jerry Yeagley are part of the ballot for the NCAA Men's College Cup 50th Anniversary Team, the NCAA announced Monday. A total of 32 players and six coaches are included on the voting ballot, which can be found on NCAA.com. Fans will have the chance to select the 11 best student-athletes and one coach through the last 50 years of the championship.
Indiana's student-athlete representatives are Armando Betancourt, Angelo DiBernardo, Dema Kovalenko, Brian Maisonneuve, Pat Noonan and Ken Snow. Voting for the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer 50th Anniversary team began on Oct. 6 and will run until noon on Oct. 15. Individual fans only will be able to submit one vote.
Betancourt was a three-time All-American from 1979-81 and was named Soccer America's Player of the Decade for the 1980s. He was the 1981 Hermann Trophy winner and ranks third on the school's all-time points list with 165. He was one of three Hoosiers named to Soccer America's All-Centuty Team in 2000 and was elected to the IU Hall of Fame in 1992.
DiBernardo earned All-America honors in 1977 and 1978 and was the Hoosiers' first Hermann Trophy winner as he took home the award in 1978. He was selected to Soccer America's All-Century Team in 2000. DiBernardo led Indiana to the NCAA Championship game in 1978 and a 23-2 record. He was elected to the IU Hall of Fame in 1991.
Kovalenko earned All-America honors in 1997 and 1998, netting 45 goals and 105 points in just three seasons. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1996 and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree, Kovalenko capped off his career with an NCAA Championship in 1998. The Hoosiers were 61-6-3 during his career.
Maisonneuve was the 1994 Hermann Trophy winner, two-time Big Ten Player of the Year and twice selected as an All-American (1993, 1994). In his Hermann Trophy season he tallied 14 goals and 36 points to lead Indiana to a 23-3 mark, Big Ten title and a trip to the NCAA Championship game. The Hoosiers also advanced to the College Cup in his freshman season as they won the Big Ten crown and posted a 21-3 record.
Noonan is one of seven three-time All-Americans in program history, picking up the honors in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He was the runner-up for the Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year award in 2001 and missed out on the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy by just four points as a senior in 2002. During his four seasons at IU he helped lead Indiana to three College Cups, with two championship game appearances and an NCAA title in 1999.
Snow is one of just two four-time All-Americans in IU history (1987-90), with current IU assistant coach Todd Yeagley being the other. He won the sport's highest honor, taking home the Hermann Trophy twice (1988, 1990), and the Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year award in those same seasons. Snow was named to both the Soccer America All-Century Team in 2000 and the publication's All-Decade team for the 1980s. He still ranks as the school's all-time leading scorer with a record 84 goals and 196 points.
Yeagley's coaching record speaks for itself as he is the all-time winningest Division I men's soccer coach with a record of 544-101-45 (.828) in 31 seasons at Indiana. Yeagley never had a losing season as head coach and led the program to six NCAA titles. Over his 31 seasons the Hoosiers made 16 trips to the NCAA College Cup, including 12 championship game appearances. In all Yeagley led Indiana to 28 NCAA Tournament berths, the third most in NCAA history, including on in each of his final 17 seasons. During his tenure Yeagley won an unprecedented six NSCAA National Coach of the Year awards and was inducted into the United State Soccer Federation Hall of Fame in 1989, and the NSCAA Hall of Fame in 2008.
Members selected to the anniversary team will be honored at the 2008 NCAA Men's College Cup in Frisco, Texas, at Pizza Hut Park on Dec. 12-14.
