BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Devan Dumes scored 21 points and freshman Verdell Jones added 18, helping Indiana beat Northwestern State 83-65 Saturday night in the debut game for new coach Tom Crean.
Northwestern State (0-1) was led by Damon Jones with 17 points and Kalem Porterie with 12, but the Demons made far too many mistakes to pull off the school's first victory over a power conference team since the 2006 NCAA tournament.
The young Hoosiers, with 14 new players on the roster, looked restless early as Northwestern State jumped to a 12-5 lead. Indiana climbed back into the game and used a 15-3 spurt to take control.
