THE OPENING TIP
Indiana is making its fifth appearance in Maui when it participates in the 25th Annual EA Sports Maui Invitational. The Hoosiers also came to paradise in 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002. The Hoosiers are 8-6 all-time in the event and won the 2002 championship defeating Virginia, 70-63, in the tournament final. The Hoosiers also advanced to the title game in 1990 and 1998 where they lost to Syracuse each time. Coach Tom Crean will be making his second straight visit to Maui. Last year, his Marquette squad fell to Duke in the championship game, 77-73. The Golden Eagles defeated Chaminade, 74-63, and Oklahoma State, 91-61, to advance to the finals.
AGAINST CHAMINADE
IU leads the series, 1-0, with the only meeting coming back in 1994 at the Maui Invitational. In that meeting, IU All-American Brian Evans scored the most points by a Hoosier at the Maui Invitational when he went off for 37 points thanks to an 8-for-10 effort from the three-point line. Alan Henderson also added a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
THE COACHES
Indiana named Tom Crean as its 28th men's basketball coach on April 2, 2008 and he is 2-2 with the Hoosiers. He came to Indiana from Marquette where he was 190-96 (66.4) in nine seasons and made five NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2003 Final Four. Crean is 1-0 all-time as a head coach against Chaminade. Swords head coach Matt Mahar is in his third year as head coach of Chaminade is 56-30.
