A Trio of Hoosiers Earn All-Big Ten Honors

CHICAGO, Ill. - Three members of the IU Volleyball team were recognized Monday night (Dec. 1) by the Big Ten Conference for their outstanding play on the court. Ashley Benson was named to the 13-member All-Big Ten Team, Erica Short earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention laurels and Caitlin Cox played her way onto the All-Freshman Team.
Benson led the Hoosiers in both hitting efficiency (.303) and total blocks (167). That season block total did not only give her a per-set average of 1.37 blocks, the 19th highest in the country, but also broke the all-time school record for most blocks in a single season at IU. The Bloomington, Ind., native also contributed 372 kills, 82 digs and seven service aces.
Short's team-leading 554 kills were just one put-away shy of tying the IU single season record set by Christina Archibald in 2002. Short shattered Archibald's career kills total (1,808), however, compiling 1,889 in her four years in Bloomington, becoming IU's all-time kills queen. Averaging 4.54 kills per set in 2008, Short ranked in the national top-ten in that category, coming in at ninth place.
Cox is one of six frosh to be chosen for the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Cox broke IU's school record for most digs in a freshman year by compiling a team-best 402 digs. Her 402 digs are the fourth-highest total in school history, regardless of class. Cox was also deadly from the service line, racking up 24 aces.
