Short and Benson Earn All-Region Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Erica Short and sophomore Ashley Benson each collected regional honors on Wednesday, Nov. 10. Short was named to the AVCA All-Mideast Region team while Benson earned honorable mention All-Mideast Region accolades. As an All-Region squad member, Short is now eligible for the All-America team.
Short's team-leading 554 kills were just one put-away shy of tying the IU single season record set by Christina Archibald in 2002. Short shattered Archibald's career kills total (1,808), however, compiling 1,889 in her four years in Bloomington, becoming IU's all-time kills queen. Averaging 4.54 kills per set in 2008, Short ranked in the national top-ten in that category, coming in at ninth place.
Benson led the Hoosiers in both hitting efficiency (.303) and total blocks (167). That season block total did not only give her a per-set average of 1.37 blocks, the 19th highest in the country, but also broke the all-time school record for most blocks in a single season at IU. The Bloomington, Ind., native also contributed 372 kills, 82 digs and seven service aces.
