With a mix of seasoned veterans and young, talented newcomers, the Indiana women's golf team worked its way through a successful fall season which culminated in a record-setting performance.
The fall ended on the right foot for the Hoosiers as they shot a school-record 277 in the final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, where they finished 10th as a team. That beat the old mark of 284 set at the NCAA Championships in 1998. In addition, the team also set the record for two-round (568) and three-round (860) scores.
Individually, Anita Gahir tied the school record with a 67 in that final round. Teammate Kellye Belcher became the 13th Hoosier to record a round under 70 with a 69 in the final round.
That 10th-place finish was one of four top-10 showings for Indiana in the fall. The season began with a ninth-place finish at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., site of the 2008 NCAA Championships. Junior Laura Nochta had her best finish of the fall at the event, tying for fourth with a 2-under 217.
The following week Indiana recorded a sixth-place finish at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis. Gahir picked up the first of three top-25 finishes by coming in fifth with a 4-over score of 220. Senior Amber Lindgren also marked her top finish of the season in the event, tying for 50th, as did newcomer Cecilia Orevik with a tie for 55th.
The Hoosiers got a preview of the Big Ten Championships at the Lady Northern Invitational, held at Purdue University's Kampen Course which is the site of the 2009 Big Ten Championships. Indiana finished fourth in the field, buoyed by top-15 finishes from Belcher (T-15th), Gahir (T-12th) and Nochta (T-15th).
In addition to Orevik, who was playing in her first tournaments for the Cream and Crimson, freshman Sara Poppas also got her feet wet this fall by competing as an individual at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational and the Badger Invitational. Poppas' round of the fall came on the final day in New Mexico when she shot a 77 on a very difficult course.
Currently working on the little things to shore up their game, the Hoosiers return to action on Feb. 1 in a match with Wisconsin in Phoenix, Ariz. Tournament play resumes Feb. 8-10 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
