BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University freshman forward Will Bruin was named to the Soccer America All-Freshman first team, the publication announced today.
Bruin was the only Big Ten player named to the All-Freshman first or second team.
A highly-touted player out of St. Louis' DeSmet High School, Bruin came to Bloomington and made an immediate impact with the Hoosiers, starting all 24 matches in his rookie campaign. The striker finished second on the team in goals scored (6), points (12) and shots (61).
Bruin's first career goal came in a 3-0 win at No. 24 UCLA, and he followed that up with another score against San Diego that same weekend. He became the only Hoosier this year to score multiple goals in a match with two scores in a 3-2 overtime victory at Evansville, including the game-winning score. His fifth goal of the season was also a game winner in a 2-0 victory over No. 8 Northwestern to end the regular season. It was Bruin's goal that gave Indiana a 1-0 victory over No. 10 Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
In addition to the All-Freshman team, Bruin was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and made the Big Ten All-Freshman team. The Hoosiers finished the 2008 season with a 14-7-3 record and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
