SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Indiana knew they were going to be in for a battle when they entered the pool against CWPA rival, Hartwick, in the ninth place game late Sunday afternoon. The teams did not disappoint, but in the end it was Hawks coming away with an 8-6 win.
Indiana (3-5) broke into the scoring column first on a goal by Kelly Palmberg with just over five minutes left in the first period, her fifth goal of the tournament. But the Hawks, who entered the weekend tied for 10th in the latest CWPA poll, were able to fight back and get two goals of their own in the period.
Hartwick continued their offensive surge, scoring two quick goals in the second to take a 4-1 lead, but the Hoosiers did not go away. Senior Brook Zimmerman found the back of the net with a minute and a half remaining in the quarter and Maggie Hannon scored with one second left on the clock to bring IU to within one, 4-3.
In the third period, the Hartwick defense was able to keep IU off the scoreboard and added one goal of their own to take a 5-3 lead to the final eight minutes. But that's when things got interesting.
Indiana scored two goals in the first two minutes of the fourth to knot the score at 5-5, with Palmberg and Zimmerman doing the honors. Hartwick quickly responded with the go-ahead goal, only to see Indiana's Amy Moore square the game up at 6-6 with 5:37 left.
But the Hawks added two goals over the final minutes to get the win and finish in ninth place and give the Hoosiers 10th.
Indiana will now travel to the East Coast next weekend for the Princeton Invite on Saturday and Sunday. The Hoosiers will open against Princeton on Saturday at 9 a.m. followed by George Washington at 2 p.m. Sunday will pit IU against Bucknell at 9:45 a.m. and Maryland 1:30 p.m.
WEEKEND NOTES
• Brooke Zimmerman continued to pace the Indiana offense, scoring nine goals in the four games this weekend in San Diego to give her 20 through eight games so far in 2008.
• Kelly Palmberg was also instrumental in the IU offense this weekend, scoring six goals of her own over the weekend and at least one in each game.
• Freshman Lauren Wyckoff was held off the scoreboard in the opening weekend but she came back strong this weekend with a pair of two goal games.
Quoting Indiana head coach Barry King
"Overall, it was a very good weekend. We grew tremendously as a team form the beginning to end every time we hit the water. The win over Bakersfield was a total team victory, where every body contributed. We saw what can happen when we play as a group and when we really get after it."
"This weekend was really about the freshmen and how they are staring to develop their sense of power and pace of the game at the college level. (Lauren) Wyckoff had a tremendous weekend for us, as did (Nicole) Redder, who did a tremendous job on defense. But the best performance of the weekend has to go to Lauren Wyckoff."
