Weekend Preview: IU Travels to Princeton for Princeton Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's water polo team will travel to Princeton, N.J., this weekend to compete in the Princeton Invite against Wagner, Maryland, San Diego State and Bucknell. The Hoosiers open with Wagner and Maryland on Saturday followed by No. 6 San Diego State and Bucknell on Sunday.
Indiana (3-5) had its first player of the week recipient of the season ths pat week, when freshman Lauren Wyckoff was named CWPA Western Division Co-Player of the Week after scoring her first collegiate goal. She would go on to add three more goals on the weekend and was an instrumental part of the Hoosiers' win over No. 20 CSU Bakersfield.
Senior Brooke Zimmerman has also continued to play well for Indiana, scoring 20 goals through eight games this season.
Here a brief look at the teams IU will take on this weekend:
Wagner Seahawks
The Seahawks will be competing for the first time in 2008 this weekend at the Princeton Invitational. They are coming off their second NCAA appearance last year after defeating Marist in the MAAC Tournament championship game.
Billy Hoelck was the Co-Offensive Player of the Year last year and returns this season as the career leader in goal at Wagner with 266. She also tied an NCAA tournament record by scoring six goals against Loyola Marymount last season.
Maryland Terrapins
The Terps are 2-2 so far this season, with wins over Brown and Redlands and losses to San Diego State and Santa Clara at the Trition Invitational last weekend.
Maryland returns a couple of its top scorers from last year, led by Shannon Simerly who had 58 goals and a shooting percentage of .367, both team highs. Elizabeth Hopkins is also back this year after leading the Terps in points with 70 in 2007.
San Diego State Aztecs
San Diego State is coming off a perfect weekend at the Trition Invitational last weekend, where they went on to defeat Loyola Marymount, 10-9 in the championship game after trailing 5-2 at the half. Jenna Schuster scored the game-tying and game-winning goals for the Aztecs.
The Aztecs are ranked sixth in the latest CWPA poll released on Tuesday and are led on offense by Anna Gonzalez, who is 10th on the all-time goals scored list at Maryland with 118 goals while Schuster is just one goal behind at 117.
Bucknell Bison
The Bison are coming off a perfect 5-0 weekend at the Hilton Hotels Colorado State Invitational, the best start to a season since they started 3-0 in 2006. At the tournament, Bucknell defeated Marist twice, UC Santa Cruz twice and Colorado State to take the title.
The offense for Bucknell has been in midseason form, scoring 10 goals in each of the first five games, including an 18 goal outburst against UC Santa Cruz, just one short of the program record of 19.
