PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. - After a four-month hiatus, the No. 19 Indiana men's golf team opened up its spring season on Sunday with a 302 in the opening round of the John Hayt Collegiate hosted by the University of North Florida. The Hoosiers sit in a tie for 11th place in the 15-team field at the Sawgrass Country Club (par 72; 6,925 yards).
Dubbed the first collegiate major of the year, the field features eight of the top 25 and 10 of the top 30 teams in the nation. Fourth-ranked Alabama leads with a 2-over 290, one shot ahead of 12th-ranked Tennessee and four strokes clear of 28th-ranked Pepperdine.
"It was nice to get a round under our belt," Indiana head coach Mike Mayer said. "Conditions were tough today. There was a lot of wind and this is a championship-caliber golf course. We played well at times, but were very erratic. I think we will improve each round and continue to play better and better."
Leading the way for the Hoosiers is junior Drew Allenspach. The Sugar Land, Texas, native sits in a share of eighth place after a gritty even-par 72. Allenspach bounced back from a triple bogey on the par-4 ninth hole to shoot 1-under on the backside. Georgia State's Joel Sjoholm leads the 81-player field at 3-under par.
Playing in the No. 1 position, junior Jorge Campillo carded a 4-over 76. Campillo, the 42nd-ranked player in college golf, is tied for 43rd place.
One shot behind Campillo are junior Seth Brandon and sophomore Alex Martin. The duo owns a share of 49th place following matching 77s.
Making his collegiate debut, true freshman Ren Han rounded out the Hoosier lineup with an 83, putting him in a share of 77th.
The 54-hole tournament continues Monday morning with the second 18. Tee times will start at 7:45 a.m. EST.
