SETTING THE SCENE
• The Indiana Hoosiers travel to the Big Ten Championships this weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.
• Indiana is ranked sixth in the most recent College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll released on Feb. 15.
• The Hoosiers last competed on Feb. 9 with a 143-100 dual meet victory over Purdue at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
• Last year Indiana finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships with 494 points. They were the conference champions in 2006.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Indiana was 2-2 in dual meets against Big Ten teams this year, defeating Northwestern and Purdue.
• Both dual meet losses came against the Michigan Wolverines by nearly identical scores, 167-133 in November and 165-133 in January.
• Ben Hesen is the defending Big Ten Champion in the 100-yard backstroke and is currently tied with Minnesota's David Plummer for the fastest time in the Big Ten this year at 47.75.
• Hesen ranks third in the Big Ten in the 200-yard backstroke (1:44.73). In the 100-yard butterfly he ranks third (47.77).
• Senior Pat Penoyar is eighth nationally and second in the Big Ten in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:57.38.
• Senior Todd Patrick ranks fifth in the Big Ten in the 400-yard individual medley (3:52.27) and third in the 200-yard IM (1:47.89).
• Indiana's 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay teams have both recorded NCAA B cuts, with the 400-medley relay team of Hesen, Penoyar, Patrick and Matt Lenton recording a time of 3:15.62 on Feb. 9 against Purdue.
• In the diving well, freshman Landon Marzullo looks to make an impact at his first Big Ten meet. He has the top IU scores this year in the 3-meter (388.35) and platform (378.08).
• Senior Taylor Roberts has the top score in the 1-meter (358.75). Last year Roberts finished second on the 3-meter, while David Legler was the runner up on the platform.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
• Indiana is No. 6 in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Top 25 Coaches Poll, released Feb. 15.
• Indiana was No. 8 in the preseason poll and No. 7 in the Nov. 7 and Dec. 17 polls and No. 8 in the Jan. 18 poll.
• Indiana is one of seven Big Ten teams in the top 25, joining No. 4 Michigan, No. 9 Minnesota, No. 12 Purdue, No. 13 Ohio State, No. 16 Penn State and No. 18 Northwestern. Wisconsin is in the also receiving votes category.
• Indiana is 1-2 against ranked teams this season, falling twice to No. 4 Michigan and defeating then-No. 7 Tennessee.
INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS
• Ben Hesen currently has the 16th-fastest time in the NCAA in the 100 back (47.75) and 17th in the 200 back (1:44.73).
• His time of 47.77 in the 100 butterfly is 32nd.
• Todd Patrick is 26th in the 200 individual medley (1:47.93) and 28th in the 400 individual medley (3:52.27).
• Pat Penoyar is 8th in the 200 breaststroke (1:57.38).
2007 BIG TEN RECAP
• The Hoosiers finished fourth at the 2007 Big Ten Championships, accumulating 494 points over the course of the three-day meet to finish just one point out of third place behind Ohio State.
• Ben Hesen had a phenomenal meet for Indiana, winning the 100-yard backstroke in 45.52, good for new school and Big Ten records. Hesen had already set the league record in the event on the opening night of the meet, swimming a 45.62 split on the opening leg of the 400-yard medley relay.
• Hesen also broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke, turning in a time of 1:42.94 to finish third in the event. The Jeffersonville, Ind., native also briefly held the school record in the 100-yard butterfly, turning in a time of 47.32 in the preliminaries of the event, before Nick Walkotten reclaimed his school standard with a time of 47.21 in the finals to finish second.
• Hesen also swam on a pair of second-place relays, helping both medley relays to runner-up finishes.
• Walkotten had an incredible meet of his own, setting a pair of school butterfly records. In addition to his mark in the 100 fly, Walkotten also lowered his own standard in the 200-yard butterfly, taking second place in 1:43.85.
• Pat Penoyar turned in a solid showing at his first Big Ten meet, finishing second in both breaststroke events and in both medley relays.
• In the dive well, Indiana posted a pair of runner-up finishes. Taylor Roberts was exactly one point from defending his three-meter title, while classmate David Leger finished second on the platform.
• In all, IU swimmers and divers set 46 new career records at the Big Ten Championships.
• Hesen was named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while Legler, Matt Lenton, Todd Patrick, Penoyar, Roberts and Walkotten were named Second Team.
