BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's water polo team will travel to the Elite Six tournament in College Park, Md., this weekend for one of the most anticipated events on the Indiana schedule. The tournament will feature the top two teams from each of the three divisions in the CWPA in an effort to have the best teams play each other more than once over the course of the season.
The IU offense continues to be paced by senior attacker Brooke Zimmerman's 27 goals and 18 assists. Zimmerman is also providing tremendous leadership for a very talented freshman class that has accounted for 37 of the team's 105 goals so far this year.
In goal, Jackie Pyrz and Katie Carson continue to share time as the two split time at the Princeton Invite last time out.
The Hoosiers will take on Brown at 9 a.m. and then wait until the end of the day to battle the host Terrapins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Sunday will see the Hoosiers tangle with Princeton at 9 a.m. followed by Hartwick at 2 p.m.
A Look at Brown
The Brown Bears have played in just one tournament so far in 2008, the Triton Invite in San Diego, a tournament that the Hoosiers also attended. Brown came away with a 1-3 mark with the lone win coming over Cal Baptist, 14-12.
The Bears are led by three sophomores who were named to the all-rookie team last year. They will be looked upon to replace four of their top eight scorers for first year head coach Felix Mercado.
A Look at Maryland
The Terrapins have been playing very well of late and will enter the weekend riding a six-game winning streak after a perfect 5-0 record at the Terrapin Invite last weekend. Christen Vagts was named CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week the past week after scoring seven goals.
Indiana and Maryland have met once already this season and IU came away with a 12-6 win at the Princeton Invitational.
A Look at Princeton
The Tigers have won five in a row, including a perfect 3-0 mark at the Maryland Invitational last Saturday. In their six wins this year, Princeton is averaging 12 goals per game while they tally just 5.5 goals per game in their two losses.
Lauren Sabb is the leading goal scorer for Princeton after scoring seven goals in the three games last Saturday to give her 17 on the season. Helen Meigs is the team leader in assists with 19.
A Look at Hartwick
The Hawks are the second team that IU will face for the second time this year at the Elite Six this weekend. The Hoosiers fell 8-6 to Hartwick at the UCSD Triton Invite on Feb. 10, which was the last time that the Hawks have played a game.
