BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana water polo team will continue its tough stretch of opening games this weekend in La Jolla, Calif., at the Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego. The Hoosiers will take on the host Tritons in the first game of the tournament on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. Pacific Time. The following is a preview of the three teams in IU's bracket along with some notes about the Hoosiers after their opening weekend at the Michigan Kick-Off two weeks ago.
"FRESH" CONTRIBUTIONS
With nearly half of the 2008 Indiana roster being freshmen, head coach Barry King has little choice but to give them time right from the start. And that he did at the Michigan Kick-Off where the freshmen accounted for seven goals on the weekend. Kelsey Campbell and Nicole Redder each tallied two goals while Kate Dunn, Amy Moore and Nora Kennelly added one goal each.
The class also accounted for 14 of the Hoosiers 30 assists over the weekend as well as 19 steals.
NEW NO. 3
Senior attacker Brooke Zimmerman passed Kristin Carpenter (136) and Deb Simone (139) and moved into thrid place on the Indiana career goals scored list with 140. She started the weekend by scoring two goals in the opener against San Jose State and followed that up with five goals against Colorado State to tie her career high. On Sunday, the native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada scored a goal against Arizona State and posted a three goal game against No. 1 UCLA to wrap up the weekend.
She has a ways to go to reach the 224 goals that Krista Peterson scored in her career to put her in second place. The all-time leader in goals scored is Kristin Stanford with 246 goals in her brilliant four-year career in Bloomington.
Loyola Marymount
The 12th ranked Loyola Marymount women's water polo team is making its seventh straight trip to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The Lions have won the Triton Invite title the last three years, going 4-0 all three years. Coming off a season opening loss to defending champions UCLA, junior Nicole Hughes is looking to lead the young Lions to a fourth straight tournament victory. Hughes led the team last year in goals with 66 and scored three against the Bruins earlier this year.
Scouting UC San Diego
The 15th ranked UC San Diego's women's water polo team enters their tournament with a 1-4 record, with all the losses coming against ranked opponents. Junior Sydney Gstettenbauer has led the Tritons this year in goals with 13 through the first five games. Senior Nicole Hermann has a team-high seven assists, while Gstettenbauer and sophomore Stephanie Bocian are leading the season thus far in steals with 11 apiece.
Scouting Cal Baptist
The Cal Baptist Lancer's enter the tournament with a 3-1 record, recording their only loss to 11th ranked Arizona State. The Lancer's are led in scoring by freshmen Kylie Chevalier, senior Corrie Stuursma, and senior Whitney Shaw. The Lancer's are also looking for big saves from junior Julie Abendschein, who has already recorded 29 on the season.
