BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team will shake off the winter rust with exhibition match play against Wisconsin on Sunday at Westbrook Village Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.
The two teams will play a practice round on Saturday before facing off on Sunday in a match that will not count for statistical purposes. The Sunday, match, a "Nassau," awards a point for the front nine holes, a point for the back nine holes and a point for the overall score.
"We are really trying to shore-up our lineup for the Central District (Invitational, Feb. 18-19)," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We are going down with six players, and five will compete at the Central. We really want to get a sense of who is playing the best and who we can take to the Central District to compete in the tournament."
It was a successful fall season for the Hoosiers as the squad posted four top-five finishes and placed in the top 10 in all five events. Laura Nochta had the top fall finish with a tie for second at the Wolverine Invitational, posting a three-round score of 221 (+8). As a team IU finished third at the event. The team's best finish came in the season opener at the Mary Fossum Invitational, tallying a score of 900 which was good for a tie for second.
Nochta heads into the spring as the strokes leader at 75.86, followed by Elaine Harris (76.46) and Kellye Belcher (76.83). Anita Gahir had her best fall finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational, placing 12th, while senior Lauren Harling finished in the top 25 (24th) at the same event. Amber Lindgren recorded her first career top-20 finish with a 17th-place effort at the Michigan Invitational, while Emily Johnson saw her first career action at the Johnie Imes where she placed 23rd.
Indiana's first real test of the spring will come Feb. 18-19 as it travels to Parrish, Fla. for the Central District Invitational. Ten of the 15 schools competing are in Golfweek's top 50, including No. 15 Kent State, No. 20 Notre Dame, No. 21 Michigan State and No. 25 Texas A&M. The Hoosiers are No. 46 in the ranking which was last released at the end of the fall season.
