Hoosiers Continue Florida Swing With USF Spring Break Tournament

Game Notes: USF Spring Break Tournament - March 11-12 (Tampa, Fla.)
OUT OF THE BOX
Indiana is coming off the Under Armour Invitational tournament last weekend where the Hoosiers went 3-2 with wins over Sam Houston State, Syracuse and Fairfield. Freshman pitcher Sara Olson went 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA to earn her first two collegiate wins while Emily Bergeson paced IU at the plate, hitting .429 with four doubles and five RBIs to go along with a .714 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage. Overall on the weekend, Indiana had eight different players record an RBI without the benefit of a home run
This week at the USF Spring Break Tournament, Indiana will square off against Hoosier State rival Ball State and the host, USF Bulls on Tuesday followed by George Mason and Boston University.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. OPPONENTS
BALL STATE
Indiana holds a 38-27 advantage in the all-time series with the Cardinals after splitting two meetings in 2007. Prior to that, Indiana had won four of the last five by a combined score of 20-6. The two teams will also meet later this year on April 15 in Bloomington.
SOUTH FLORIDA
The Hoosiers and Bulls have split the previous 16 meetings, dating back to the first meeting in 1990. Last year, USF took two from Indiana after Indiana took two against the Bulls in the 2006 before the Hoosiers advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Recent history has belong to USF, but in the early meetings between the two schools, Indiana held the distinct advantage. In the 18 games played from 1978 through 1997, USF managed just one win.
GEORGE MASON
Last year's meeting between IU and George Mason, a 1-0 IU win, marked the first meeting between the two schools since 1984Overall, Indiana holds a 3-0 advantage, with Patriots scoring just one run total in the three meetings.
BOSTON UNIVERSITY
The Terriers and Hoosiers have met just two times prior to this season and have split the two meetings. Indiana won the first meeting back in 2002, a 5-4 decision. Last year, BU won a 4-1 game. Jennilee Huddleston had three hits in the game for the Hoosiers and Emily Bergeson scored the lone IU run.
BERGY'S BURNIN' UP
With the Hoosiers in need of some pop in the lineup following a tough trip to Chattanooga for the Frost Classic, junior shortstop Emily Bergeson stepped into that role. She hit .429 with four of her six hits being doubles and driving in five runs. At one point, she had a stretch of five at-bats where she had four doubles. She also posted a .714 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .500.
WIN NUMBER ONE....AND TWO
Freshman pitcher Sara Olson came on in relief against Syracuse and threw 3.2 innings of four-hit softball, allowing one run to get her first win as the Hoosiers came from behind to get the win. She followed it up the next day by going 5.1 innings in a starting assignment against Fairfield to get her second win. She had a no-hitting going through 4.2 innings before a single to right field broke up that bid. In that game against the Stags, she also struck out a season high six batters.
WRIGHT STUFF
Junior Monica Wright was listed as the starting pitcher against Chattanooga, but a switch prior to the game put Sara Olson in the circle for the first pitch. Olson went two innings before Wright was brought in to shutdown a Moc offense that had scored eight runs in the first two innings. She did just that, allowing three hits and striking out five over the final four innings.
She continued her dominance out of the bullpen at the Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. She pitched three innings of one-hit relief against Kennesaw State and followed that by coming on with one on and one out against Fairield in the seventh inning to retire the next two hitters to preserve a 6-5 win for IU.
She also made two starts in Clearwater and gave up just two runs in 8.1 innings on eight hits to lower her season ERA by over a run.
