BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Athletics took part in the 18th Annual National Sportsmanship Day, which was celebrated on March 4 in more than 14,000 schools throughout the United States, as well as in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, India, Australia and Bermuda.
The C.H.A.M.P.S./Life Skills program at IU hosted students from the Bloomington Boys and Girls Club for a celebration of the national event. The Hoosiers held a poster contest, an educational session about the importance of sportsmanship, a facility tour and a basketball lesson from some the IU men's and women's basketball players.
Indiana received recognition from the Institute for International Sports as a 2007-08 All-American Sportsmanship School.
National Sportsmanship Day was founded by the Institute for International Sports Executive Director Dan Doyle in 1991 with several important objectives:
• To designate a special day each year during which thousands of student-athletes, coaches, administrators and parents would engage in thoughtful and reasoned discussion about the role of sportsmanship.
• To provide participating schools, clubs, and other athletic organizations with a number of tips on how to successfully celebrate the day. At the core of this important objective is the Institutes' belief that good discussion is fatal to bad sportsmanship, a belief that has been confirmed since watching the many positive results generated by schools that actively participate in National Sportsmanship Day.
• To make participation in National Sportsmanship Day an anchor event which fosters good sportsmanship on a year-round basis.
