AUSTIN, Texas - With each of the 17 teams struggling through the final round, the Indiana women's golf team posted a 10th-place finish at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, held at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
The Hoosiers carded a final-round score of 334 (+46) to finish with a two-round total of 654 (320-334). New Mexico took home the team title with a score of 623 (303-320), followed by Florida (305-319=624), Texas (308-322=630), Arkansas (311-321=632), TCU (321-321=642) and Notre Dame (317-325=642). Originally scheduled as a three-round tournament, yesterday's second round was canceled due to inclement weather. The challenges faced by the teams was evident in today's scores as Florida's 319 (+31) was the top round of the day.
"It was incredibly windy out there today, but the ladies hung in there and tried to fight through it," said head coach Clint Wallman. "It as a rough ending to the day and not the finish that we wanted but some things, like the weather, you just can't control.
"This team will bounce back, though, and we will look ahead and get ready for Tucson."
Indiana finished with three individuals in the top 50, led by senior Lauren Harling's 162 which placed her in a tie for 32nd. After posting a 77 in the first round, Harling struggled on the final day, going without a birdie and posting three double bogeys en route to a 13-over 85.
Sophomore Laura Nochta finished just one stroke behind Harling at 163 (81-82), good for a tie for 38th. Nochta started out well with a birdie on her first hole, but bogeys on four of the next five holes put her at +3. After four-straight pars, Nochta finished with four bogeys and a double bogey on the final five holes. Her score of 82 was the low round of the day for IU.
Finishing in a tie for 47th, sophomore Anita Gahir capped off the tournament with an 84 to finish at 164 (80-84). After a bogey and a double bogey on the first two holes, Gahir settled down and went one-under over the next seven holes. Gahir was at six-over with just two holes remaining before back-to-back triple bogeys ballooned her score to +12.
Sophomore Kellye Belcher and senior Elaine Harris finished with identical tournament scores of 170, putting them in a tie for 72nd. Like most of the players out there today, Belcher struggled to find her game with three double bogeys and pars on just five of the 18 holes to finish with a 16-over 88. Harris, on the other hand, recorded her best round of the tournament with an 83, picking up a birdie on hole 14 and adding eight par holes to her total.
The Hoosiers are back in action March 30-31 as they travel to the Mountain View Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
