BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A goal from Lee Hagedorn gave Indiana an early lead but the Louisville Cardinals came back with a score in the 73rd minute as the Hoosiers and U of L played to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night in a spring exhibition match at Armstrong Stadium.
With the tie Indiana is now 1-0-1 this spring season. IU returns to action this Saturday with matches against Michigan and Oakland at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Mich.
It was Louisville's game in the first half as the Cardinals held a decisive 9-3 advantage in shots taken with three of those looks on-goal. Indiana did have a dangerous chance with about 24 minutes to play in the first half as Michael Roach played a thru ball to Andy Adlard, but Adlard saw his ball blocked by UL goalkeeper Andre Boudreaux.
Louisville's Aaron Clapham broke free on a dangerous run in the 27th minute but IU goalkeeper Chay Cain made a diving save to his right, getting a hand on the ball before it found its way in around the near post. The far post was the Cardinals' enemy just before the halftime break as J.T. Murray's shot bounced off the pipe and back into play at 35:15.
The halftime break seemed to be just what the Hoosiers needed as they came out firing and broke through with a score from Hagedorn at 62:35 for a 1-0 lead. Michael Roach attempted a shot from the corner and the ball made its way back out to Hagedorn in the upper quadrant of the penalty area. With an open look, Hagedorn unleashed a shot that cleanly hit the back of the net.
It was almost exactly 10 minutes later that Louisville's Kelley Walker tied things up as he made his way unmarked to the Hoosiers' net where he blasted a shot from 15 yards out that Cain was unable to get to.
Brad Ring led the Hoosiers with three shots, along with two from Kevin Noschang. Louisville finished with a 12-9 overall lead in the shots tally, led by five from Phil Edington.
With the spring season a chance for the coaches to experiment, IU worked with Kevin Alston, Rich Balchan and Hagedorn comprising the back line and Roach and Noschang up top. Ring, Eric Alexander, John Mellencamp, Andy Adlard and Billy Weaver patrolled the midfield. Indiana must replace three defenders from last season as Charley Traylor, Greg Stevning and Ofori Sarkodie have all moved on.
