FT. WAYNE, Ind. - A goal in the 33rd minute proved to be the only scoring on a rainy, cold day as Notre Dame defeated Indiana 1-0, Saturday night in the feature match of the National Soccer Festival Spring Event in Ft. Wayne, Ind. The loss puts the Hoosiers at 2-1-2 this spring.
The Fighting Irish took the lead on a goal from sophomore Tamba Samba. Samba headed home the ball off service from Jack Traynor for the lone goal of the match.
The Irish goal seemed to awaken the Hoosiers as they unleashed a flurry of shots at Notre Dame goalkeeper Andrew Quinn. In the 40th minute he was able to steer an IU shot wide, then batted away a blast from Andy Adlard inside the box. Quinn got lucky as Kevin Noschang was unable to get a solid strike on the rebound.
The Hoosiers enter their final week of spring play, matching up against 2007 College Cup participant Virginia Tech on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium. That is followed by the spring season-ending match against the Mexican Youth National Team on Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the match against Mexico are $5 for adults, while IU students, youths (ages 2-18) and groups of 25 or more can purchase tickets for just $3 each. Children two and under are free. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and the first 500 fans will receive a rally towel from adidas. Ticket may be purchased at the gate on the day of the game or in advance by calling the IU Athletic Ticket Office at 866-IUSPORTS.
