Western Division Championship Notes
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's water polo team returns to the state of Pennsylvania this weekend for the CWPA Western Division Championships in Grove City, Pa., for a quarterfinal matchup with Slippery Rock University at 7:45 p.m. on Friday.
Indiana (17-13, 6-1) finished the regular season on a six-game win streak and has won seven of their last eight. Over the last six games, the Hoosiers have outscored their opponents 89-29, including a season-high 18 goals scored against Washington and Jefferson in the season finale.
Senior Brooke Zimmerman, who has 66 goals scored and 44 assists, has paced the Hoosier offense all season. Both of those totals are just shy of her single-season records of 76 goals and 52 assists that she set last year. She is just five goals shy of becoming the third player in IU history to reach 200 goals scored in her career.
While Zimmerman paced the offense over the course of the season, it was junior Maggie Hannon that drove the attack for the Hoosiers with 15 goals over the final six games. She finished the regular season with 46 goals, 15 more goals than she had scored combined over her first two seasons. She capped the season off in style with a five-goal outburst against Washington and Jefferson and was named CWPA Western Division Player of the Week.
The semifinals will take place in the morning on Saturday and then the medal round will be played in the evening, with the championship game being contested at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night.
