BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The #39 Indiana University men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to #2 Ohio State on Wednesday. Redshirt freshman Lachlan Ferguson seized a three-set victory in his singles match for the Hoosiers.
"We need to find some intrinsic motivation and make winning a habit," said Head Coach Randy Bloemendaal. "There was no difference in skill level out there today."
Indiana grabbed an early lead in the race for the doubles point, thanks to a No. 2 doubles win by Dara McLoughlin and Thomas Richter. The two seniors came out on top in a 9-7 battle with the Buckeyes' Justin Kronauge and Shuhei Uzawa. Ohio State was able to nab the final two doubles contests, however, by close scores of 8-6 and 9-7.
Ferguson began his singles match with a 6-4 first-set winner before Uzawa forced a third set with his 6-3 second-set triumph. With the team outcome already determined, the final set was shortened to a 10-point tiebreaker. Ferguson, a native of Australia, jumped out to an early lead in the tiebreaker and rode it to a 10-6 win to earn the Hoosiers a team point.
Freshman Chris Foster got the nod in the singles line-up for the first start of his Hoosier career. Playing in the No. 6 singles position, Foster gave Ohio State's Dominic Ozanne all he could handle, falling just short in the 7-5, 6-4 defeat.
