BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The IU Varsity Club honored 23 Hoosier student-athletes with its annual Scholastic Achievement Awards dinner on Friday, April 18.
The Scholastic Achievement Award is given to the student-athlete that boasts the highest grade point average (GPA) of any member of their respective team. The 2008 Jack D. Tichenor Award was also given to IU's top male and female student-athletes that hold the highest individual cumulative GPA among the entire Department of Athletics. This year's recipients were Kristin Whitezell (women's cross country and track and field), Andrew Allenspach (men's golf) and Kevin Trulock (football).
Allenspach, who recorded a 4.0 GPA this year, is second on the Indiana men's golf team with a 73.54 scoring average in 26 rounds this year. He has one top-five, three top-10 and six top-25 finishes on the season. In four events this spring, Allenspach has tied for 12th, tied for 10th, tied for sixth and finished fifth.
Off the course, Allenspach is a standout student in the classroom. He was a first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V selection and collected Academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore.
Trulock, a biology major, carries a 4.0 grade point average and received the inaugural Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award. He will attend the Indiana University School of Medicine beginning in the fall of 2008. As a place-kicker on the IU football team, Trulock has earned the following academic awards: Academic All-Big Ten Conference, Draddy Award Semifinalist and the Ted Whereatt Senior Academic Excellence Award.
Trulock currently works for Bloomington Hospital as a phlebotomist. Over the years, he has served as chairman of the Student Athletic Board, an undergraduate teaching intern mentoring students enrolled in biology classes, and as a student tutor for the Teen Learning Center, tutoring underprivileged teens preparing to take the GED.
Whitezell wrapped her cross country career in 2007 after earning a spot in the Hoosier pack at the Big Ten Championships and at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship. The six-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and 2007 Jack Tichenor Award recipient has been a standout for IU on both the cross country course and the track, earning second team honors during the 2004 cross country season after posting a top-12 finish at the Big Ten Championships.
Whitezell is also a two-time national meet qualifier in cross country and boasts the third-best time in IU history in the steeplechase, which was recorded during the 2004 outdoor season with a time of 10:48.75.
