Water Polo Earns No. 3 Seed At CWPA Eastern Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's water polo team received the no. 3 seed at the CWPA Eastern Championships, the conference announced on Monday. The Hoosiers will play the sixth-seeded University of Maryland Terrapins at 3:30 p.m. this Friday, April 25. The Eastern Championships are being hosted by the University of Michigan and will be played in Donald B. Canham Natatorium.
Indiana (19-14) has defeated Maryland in both of their meetings this season. The first meeting was on Feb. 16 at the Princeton Invite where the Hoosiers claimed an 11-7 win. Nicole Redder and Kelsey Campbell both recorded hat tricks in the win while Maggie Hannon found the back of the cage twice.
The two teams squared off once again two weeks later in College Park, Md., at the Elite Six tournament. There, Indiana held on for a tough 10-9 win as Brooke Zimmerman scored four times Nicole Redder added a hat trick.
One aspect of the game that the Hoosiers were able to excel at against Maryland in both games was the power play. In the first meeting, Indiana was 4-of-8 and then went 5-for-11 in the second meeting.
Katie Carson posted the win in goal for the Hoosiers in game one by making 11 saves on 28 Maryland shots. In game two, senior Jackie Pyrz also made 11 saves on 33 Terrapin shots to earn the win.
With a win, Indiana will reach the 20-win mark for the sixth time in the last seven seasons after finishing 19-14 a season ago.
