ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The third-seeded Indiana water polo team put two difficult losses behind them on Sunday and defeated eighth-seeded Mercyhurst College 15-3 to earn seventh place at the Eastern Championships. Lauren Wyckoff and Maggie Hannon paced the offense for Indiana with three goals apiece.
Just as they did in Saturday's game against Brown, the Hoosiers (20-16) took an early lead in the first eight minutes, scoring six goals and keeping Mercyhurst off the board. The Hoosiers extended the lead in the second by outscoring the Lakers 4-1 to take a commanding 10-1 lead into halftime.
Kelsey Campbell and Amy Moore matched the Lakers' pair of goals in the third to keep the nine-goal lead going into the fourth period. Then in the final stanza, Indiana tacked on three more goals to get a final of 15-3.
Redder finished with a pair of goals, as did Campbell and Palmberg while Brooke Zimmerman, Moore and Nora Kennelly each had one. Zimmerman also had two assists in the game and Wyckoff, Redder and Brittany Estrada had one.
Jackie Pyrz and Katie Carson combined to make 11 saves in goal for the Hoosiers.
The goal by Zimmerman gives her 77 on the year to set a new single-season record at Indiana, besting the previous high of 76 she set last season. She finishes her career with 206 career goals, the third-most all-time at Indiana. She was also named to the all-tournament second team at the end of the Eastern Championships.
Hannon, a junior, also put a cap on a tremendous season with her 12th hat trick of the year. She finishes the 2008 season with 62 goals scored, putting her in fifth place on the single-season goals scored list at Indiana.
