CARMEL, Ind. - Freshman Lauren Giesecke was impressive in her collegiate debut and sophomore Anita Gahir and senior Elaine Harris are pacing the Hoosiers as the first two rounds of the Indiana Invitational at Crooked Stick Golf Club are in the book.
Indiana is currently tied with Texas for fifth with a two-round score of 602 (300-302). Sixth-ranked Purdue has run away from the field at 15-under-par (279-282=561), 29-strokes ahead of second-place UNLV (299-291=590). Ohio State is third at 19-over (295-300=595), with Illinois one stroke ahead of the Hoosiers at 25-over (294-307=601).
"I think it was a day of stretches where things would go really well and then we would slow down a bit, then do really well again," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We just have to do a better job of concentrating throughout the course of the round."
The teams will be back on the course at 9 a.m. tomorrow for the final round of competition.
"All the things we did really well last week (in a team victory at the Mountain View Collegiate) we did really well this week," Wallman said. "We just didn't do them in as long of stretches as we did last week."
Gahir and Harris are both tied for 17th with a score of 150. Gahir opened the day with a 1-over 73, picking up three birdies along the way. Round two saw her card a 77, opening the round with a birdie on hole two.
Harris shot a 77 in the first round but came back with three birdies in round two and a score of 73, including going 1-under over the final five holes.
Laura Nochta is tied for 24th with a 151 (75-76). She started the day with a 75, sitting at -2 after the first seven holes before closing out the front nine with a double bogey on eight and a bogey on nine. Nochta produced a 4-over 76 in the second round, recording birdies on holes three and four.
The reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, Lauren Harling is tied for 32nd with scores of 75 and 78 for a 153 total. Harling recorded pars on 11 of 18 holes in round one and had a pair of birdies in round two.
Playing in her first career tournament and competing as an individual, Giesecke showed no signs of being nervous as she is tied for 42nd with a 155 (77-78). Although she opened round one with a bogey, Giesecke went two under over the next seven holes. Holding steady at 2-over with four holes to play, the newcomer stumbled a bit with bogeys on the final three holes. She added her third birdie of the day on hole eight in round two and finished at six over.
"She is an athlete," Wallman said. "She is relatively new to the game, so she has been soaking up everything we've been talking about. The team was very supportive in helping her with the logistics of playing a collegiate tournament, and then she just went out and played."
Sophomore Kellye Belcher has struggled to find her footing and is tied for 52nd with a total of 159 (83-76) over the first two rounds. After a rocky start with a double bogey on 14 and taking eight strokes on the par-4 18, Belcher came back in the second round to go four over, buoyed by birdies on holes five and 16.
Also competing as an individual, junior Amber Lindgren is tied with Belcher in 52nd with scores of 78 and 81 on day one. Lindgren recorded pars on 12 of 18 holes in the first round.
