COLUMBUS, Ohio - With one round in the books at the 2008 NCAA Central Regional, the Indiana men's golf team owns sole possession of 11th place after shooting a 300 on Thursday. The Hoosiers, who entered the regional as the eight seed in the 27-team field, played in the afternoon session at Ohio State's Scarlet Course (par 71; 7,455 yards).
IU is making its fourth trip to regionals in the last five seasons and is in search of its first trip to the NCAA Finals since 1996. In order to advance, the Hoosiers need to make their way into the top 10. Indiana is currently one stroke behind Lamar and the host Buckeyes for that coveted spot.
Wake Forest leads the regional following a 6-over-par round of 290. The Demon Deacons hold a two-shot lead over Alabama and a three-stroke advantage on Oklahoma State.
Riding the wave of momentum from his three-tournament winning streak, Hoosier Jorge Campillo was one of 10 players in the 141-player field to shoot even par or lower with an even-par 71. The Big Ten Golfer of the Year is tied for seventh place, two strokes behind Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest.
Campillo carded 14 pars on the day with birdies at the par-5 fourth and par-4 ninth holes. The Big Ten champion bounced back from a bogey at No. 2 and played 2-under par the next 13 holes before a bogey at No. 16.
Playing in their first NCAA Regional, sophomore Alex Martin and true freshman Ren Han posted matching 76s. The duo enters the second 18 in a share of 55th place.
After recording an even-par 36 going out, Martin struggled to a 5-over 40 coming in. Han enjoyed success on the backside, collecting a 1-over 36 following a 4-over 40 on the front nine.
Junior Seth Brandon sits in a tie for 77th place with a first-round 77. Brandon went out in 38 and finished the afternoon in 39 for his 6-over total.
Rounding out the lineup, junior Drew Allenspach capped off his opening round with a birdie for a 79.
The regional resumes on Friday with the second of the three rounds. Tee times begin at 7 a.m. EDT and the Hoosiers will tee off in the morning session. Visit www.golfstat.com to follow all the action live throughout the regional.
