Mayer Named Regional Coach of the Year

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- - Indiana University men's golf coach Mike Mayer was named Division I Eaton Golf Pride Regional Coach of the Year for the Midwest, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Wednesday.
The nine regional coaches are now candidates for the Eaton Golf Pride National Coach of the Year, which will be announced following the NCAA Division I National Championships currently being held at Birck Boilermaker Golf Course Complex Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
Mayer is in his 10th season at the helm of the Indiana program, leading this year's squad to a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships and his first career berth in the NCAA Championships. Mayer's team placed 10th at the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio to earn its spot in the NCAA Championship field.
Under his tutelage, junior Jorge Campillo became the eighth Hoosier to win a Big Ten championship and the first since Jeff Overton claimed medalist honors in 2005. During his tenure Hoosiers golfers have earned All-Big Ten honors 12 times with at least one all-conference selection in each of his 10 seasons.
In 2008, Indiana recorded a pair of tournament victories at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate and the UMB Bank-Mizzou Tiger Classic. Junior Seth Brandon took home the individual title at Pinehurst, while Campillo was victorious at the UMB Bank-Mizzou Tiger Classic and Boilermaker Invitational, in addition to his Big Ten title.
This is not the first regional coach of the year honor for Mayer as he earned the award in 2006 after leading the Hoosiers to their third-straight NCAA Regional appearance.
