COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Indiana track and field teams closed a successful weekend at the Jesse Owens Track Classic, hosted by Ohio State at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, May 3.
IU won the 4x100-meter relay race with a time of 40.54. Senior Kiwan Lawson won the long jump with a mark of 8.09 meters (26-06.50), but his mark did not qualify him for the regional meet due to a wind reading of 5.1. Senior Kyle Jenkins recorded a personal-best leap of 7.66 meters (25-01.75) to improve his regional mark. Junior Jeff Coover finished in a tie first in the pole vault with a mark of 5.05 meters (16-06.75), but lost to Purdue's Eric Sparks in the jump off at 5.20 meters.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team placed third with a time of 3:12.76. Sophomore Chris Sackmann was the fourth collegiate athlete to cross the finish line, sixth overall, in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.33. Junior Brennon Plotner clocked a personal-best time of 4:10.29 to finish fourth in the one mile run. Sophomore Jared Nuxoll placed fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 2.07 meters (6-09.50) for a new personal best.
The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, May 9, when IU hosts the Billy Hayes Invitational at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington.
