Former Hoosier Overton Qualifies for British Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana University golfer Jeff Overton will be one of the 156 competitors at the 2008 British Open after qualifying for the event by winning an international qualifier held at the TPC of Michigan.
Overton scorched the competition, shooting 14-under par for 72 holes. The next best score carded was an eight-under showing by John Rollins. Overton posted a 63 in round one before clinching his spot in the British Open with a 67 on day two of the qualifier. The 137th Open Championship takes place at Royal Birkdale and will run from July 17-20.
The Evansville, Ind., native graduated from IU in 2005 and has been a PGA Tour member the last three years. The British Open will mark his first career appearance in a major. During his playing days with the Cream and Crimson, Overton garnered two All-American honors and was also named Big Ten Golfer of the Year in '04 and '05. His 71.72 career scoring average is the lowest in school history.
